The BBMP recently put out a notification for cutting of 112 trees on Jayamahal Road for widening the road.
We the citizens of Bengaluru oppose this move strongly for the reasons mentioned below and are planning to conduct a Human chain on Jayamahal Road on 11th Feb between 9AM to 11AM to show our displeasure against this move.
1) Trees are a part of culture of Bangalore, people loved the place for it’s greenery, weather, birds. People are today upset about the loss of trees in Bangalore and most of us want to conserve trees. By destroying the remaining trees around, it’s equal to destroying the remaining charm, legacy and beauty of Bangalore.
2) The road widening is not a solution to solve the traffic problem of the City, there is increasing vehicular population in the City by widening road it’s not going to decrease vehicles on road. BBMP and other Govt. agencies should focus on measures that reduce private vehicle traffic – so increase BMTC buses and frequency, give us suburban train connectivity like in Cities of Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad etc.
3) We just heard about the air quality issues Delhi faced and we are afraid Bangalore’s air quality would decrease to dangerous levels. Trees are filters they capture carbon and give Oxygen, its common knowledge as we learnt this in school. By cutting trees, we don’t get clean air to breath and this will cause health problems like asthma, bronchitis. Our Quality of life gets less. Please don’t take our right to breath clean air, in essence it is taking our right to live.
4) BBMP should have a meeting with the people of Bangalore, it’s not enough to just give them an email id to post their opinion. We prefer raising our voices in person than in writing. Please have a meeting and listen to us and collect our opinions that way.
As for evidence – We have heard about Delhi, we don’t want to have wear masks to breath, that would increase our cost of living as well, spending money to buy oxygen cylinders. Our health will take a toll, – we won’t be able to spend time outdoors walking or jogging because air quality is bad.
We have so many people’s discontentment expressed in recent events as people we came out and protested against projects of Govt. that involved cutting of trees, i.e, Steel Flyover.
We need your support as responsible Citizens of Bengaluru to save our trees and weather so, please join us and bring your friends along
We have a Facebook event for this as well
